  1. Unload store bought meat from car as soon as possible and refrigerate immediately.



  2. Place packaged meat in the coldest part of refrigerator.



  3. Adjust refrigerator temperature to 40 degrees F and freezer temperature to 0 degrees F.



  4. If placing in freezer, over wrap with freezer paper or plastic wrap prior to placing in freezer.



  5. Use meat placed in refrigerator within 2 to 3 days and meat placed in freezer within 2 to 3 months.

The basic meat types that are commonly used in households require some special techniques to keep fresh. Fresh meat keeps fresh at 38 degrees F to 40 degrees F. Meat is best kept fresh at the back of refrigerator away from the door. Meat can be stored directly in its original wrapping if going to be used within 2 days, else should be over wrapped and kept in freezer. But never freeze luncheon meats.

  1. Beef, veal, lamb, remain fresh for 2 to 4 days.



  2. Luncheon meats, whole ham, bacon can be kept fresh for 5 to 7days.


  • Time Period To Keep Meat Fresh in Freezer (Less than 0 degrees F)


  1. While beef can be stored for 6 to 12 months, pork is best consumed within 6 months and lamb within 9 months.



  2. Ham remains fresh in freezer for 60 days and veal stays fresh for almost 9 months.



  3. Bacon when stored in freezer should be consumed within a month.

  2. Check labels of packaged meat for expiry date.



  3. Follow handling instructions given on the label of packaged meat.
