Introduction: Native to Southwest Asia, saffron comes from the flower of a plant called saffron crocus or Crocus sativus. Each sativus flower has three stigmas, which are dried so that it can be used in coloring and seasoning several dishes across the world. Use of saffron first began in Asia and spread to European and Mediterranean cuisine later. Freezing saffron, hence, is important since it is the world's most expensive spice.


Why buy saffron in bulk: People, who use saffron, often buy it in larger quantities to save money. Freezing saffron in the correct way is important for the spice as well as for your wallet too. Freeze saffron and use it up to three years without losing its flavor and color.

Step 1: Freezing saffron is no rocket science but a little carelessness can ruin the taste or rich golden-yellow hue of your expensive spice. Take a piece of newspaper and pour the bunch of saffron on it. Look for any unwanted particles in it and remove it.


Step 2: Take an aluminum foil and wrap the spice in it efficiently. This kind of wrapping will protect it from light and air before you finally freeze saffron.


Step 3: Freezing saffron in an airtight container or freezer bag will give it a lasting life. However, make sure that airtight container has neither dust particles nor moisture. Use a soft cloth to wipe from inside the container as a precautionary measure. Then keep the wrapped foil in it. You can also use a glass jar instead of a freezer bag or airtight container.


Step 4: Keep the airtight container in the freezer. Freezing saffron in a freezer bag needs a little more care. You must keep it on top of the freezer or otherwise assure yourself that no object will fall on the freezer bag, otherwise it will crush the saffron threads.


Step 5: When you need it, keep it out from the freezer and remove a few threads and freeze saffron again in the refrigerator immediately.
