How To Dry Truffles For Later Use

If you are fond of French or Italian cuisine, you must know how to dry truffles for later use. In case you do not know about truffles – you need to know that this is a type of fungi which is used in several cuisines to enhance the tastes of food. Truffles are not easily available, especially if you do not stay near those places where they are available in abundance. In such a case, it becomes very essential to know how to dry truffles, so that you can use them later on. Drying truffles is the best way to ensure that these fungi remain fit for use – even after a year. Thus, whenever you get truffles you just need to buy them and store them for later use sothat you can have them in your foods whenever you feel like.


 


To dry truffles effectively so that they can be used later on, you will need a cutting board, a sharp knife, a brown paper bag and also a masking tape.


 


You can start the process by placing all the truffles on a cutting board. You need to make sure that the board is clean – you can even clean this board with cold water so that any previous debris which might exist in the board is removed easily. This is also a good way to ensure that the truffles do not have any other sticky food particles on them from the cutting board. This is an important step of drying truffles for later use.


 


Once you have placed these truffles on the clean board, you need to slice each of these into halves. Use a very sharp knife for the purpose since a blunt knife will cause uneven and rough cuts which will look ugly. This is the second crucial step to dry truffles at home which needs to be done slowly and patiently, especially when you plan to dry truffles in bulk.


 


When you have completed the slicing of the truffles, you can let all these truffles rest on the cutting board for at least 30 minutes, before you start pouring them in brown paper bags. Drying truffles is quite easy in paper bags, since these bags are available in large number of sizes and it is quite easy to fold the top portions of the bags also and tape them up effectively. Plastic bags often leak and often slip while taping.


 


You should put these sealed truffles in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours, after which you can remove their tape. When you remove the tape, it ensures that air flows freely into the bag which is essential to dry truffles for later use. After removing the tape, you can put these bags into the refrigerator. If you are drying truffles in the refrigerator with other foods, you should ensure that all other foods are well covered or else the smell of truffles might contaminate the other foods which are present which is not at all desired.
