How To Store Tilapia?

For most fish lovers, tilapia is an obvious choice because of the mild, light flavor that it offers. However, they are always faced with the question of “How to store tilapia?”. Tilapia can be stored easily at homeCatching tilapias or buying them in bulk definitely saves you money. But if you are challenged with the problem of storing tilapia, then fret no more. Here are a few tips that will guide you on how to store tilapia, so that you can enjoy their fresh taste for a longer time.

•    Ensure that the fish is kept cold and clean. In order to retain their high-quality, freeze the tilapias within 12 hours of buying them or catching them. If you are storing freshly caught live fish then store it in an ice chest till the time you are ready to move them in the freezer. If you are storing counter-bought or prepared tilapia, then keep them cold in a refrigerator.
•    Remove the scales, gut, gills and fins before storing them. Cut the fishes into fillet.
•    Now, apply some gelatin mixture to the fishes. This will preserve them for a longer time and increase their shelf-life. To make the gelatin mixture, follow the instructions below:

o    Take about 1 ¾ cups of water in a bowl and add ¼ cup of lemon juice. This gives you 2 cups of lime water. Keep this liquid in two portions, i.e., ½ cup and 1 ½ cups.
o    Add 1 packet of gelatin to the ½ cup of lime water and mix well. Leave it aside.
o    Pour the remaining 1 ½ cups of liquid on a pan and bring it to a boil.
o    Now, stir in the gelatin lightly.
o    Remove the pan from heat and the let the gelatin cool down.

•    Now, dip the tilapia fishes into the gelatin mixture and coat them well on all sides. Place the dipped fish in a colander so that the excess liquid is drained off.
•    Once the extra liquid is drained off, wrap the fishes in a plastic wrap tightly. Then, wrap another layer of aluminum foil on the plastic wrap. This will protect it from tearing in freezer. Fishes, when stored in freezers, are prone to get freezer burns. To avoid this, ensure that no excess air remains in the plastic wrap.
•    Place it in the freezer and store. You can also mark the plastic wraps with dates, so that you know how long you are storing them and when you need to consume them.

It is relatively cheap, neutral in flavor and is the most sustainable fish in the world. It is high in protein, less in fat and can be cooked in numerous ways.
