Homestyle Lentil Soup

Ingredients
  Dried lentils 1 Pound
  Water 6 Cup (96 tbs)
  Onions 2 Medium, chopped
  Carrots 4 , sliced cubed or trimmed in the shape of round balls
  Thyme 1 Teaspoon
  Bay leaf 1
  Salt 1 Teaspoon
  Sugar 2 Tablespoon
  Whole black peppercorns 10
  Cured ham/Canadian bacon 5 Ounce, cut into 1/2 inch cubes (heavily cured)
  Dry red wine 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
Directions

Combine all ingredients, except for the wine, in the slow cooker.
Cover and cook on low 6 to 8 hours.
Just before serving, stir in the red wine.
Adjust seasonings, if necessary.
Additional water may be added for a thinner consistency.
