1) Take a saucepan with boiling water and add split peas, ham hocks and barley in it. Simmer for about 45 minutes.
2) Take out bones and trim fat from meat. Place meat back in the pot.
3) Add all the remaining ingredients and simmer for about 45 minutes. Add extra water, if required and if soup becomes excessively thick.
4) Spoon out the soup in individual bowls and serve immediately.
