Bacon Wrapped Shrimp

Bacon-wrapped shrimp is one of the popular dishes in Charleston restaurants, which refers to a dish where shrimp is wrapped in bacon slices, and broiled until bacon turns crispy.  There are several variations of this dish, with the difference lying in terms of ingredients used; however, the basic ingredients, bacon and shrimp, remain common in all the recipes.

Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp Ingredients and Preparation Overview

Ingredients

The two main ingredients required to prepare the dish consist of jumbo shrimp and bacon slices. The ingredients that would be required for preparing the marinade include sugar, white vinegar, olive oil, salt, paprika, cumin, black pepper, curry, and cayenne.

Skewers or toothpicks are also required, which should be soaked in lukewarm water for about half an hour before using them.

Preparation Overview

The marinade is prepared by mixing all the ingredients together in a bowl, and well washed shrimp (after removing the tails) is soaked in this marinade for around half an hour. The shrimp can be partially cooked and then marinated; however, in this case the time required for marinating should be increased to one hour. Meanwhile, bacon is cooked in a big sized skillet for only two minutes, until the edges start curling. The bacon is then wrapped around shrimp, with both of them being secured with the help of toothpick or skewer, and placed in broiler for around fifteen minutes, until bacon gets crispy

Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp Recipe variations

There are several variations of the basic recipe, with the difference lying in terms of ingredients used. Here are few variations of the dish:

  • Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp with Sage- In this recipe, peeled shrimp, bacon pieces, and small leaves of sage are the only ingredients required. The shrimp is deveined and sage leaf is placed inside the opening that has been created to get rid of dark vein. Thereafter, shrimp is wrapped with bacon slice in such a way that one of the ends gets tucked in the last fold, hence avoiding the need of toothpick to hold all the ingredients together. The dish is sautéed until crispy and served hot.

  • Barbecue Bacon Wrapped Shrimp with Basil Stuffing- in order to prepare barbeque style dish, the shrimps are cut in the form of butterfly by creating slit at the back, and stuffed with a mixture of parmesan cheese, garlic, and basil. The shrimps are then wrapped with bacon slices, while making sure to tuck in the ends and leaving the tails unwrapped. The bacon and shrimp dish is now placed on baking sheet which is placed in oven for around fifteen minutes. Thereafter, the shrimp is dipped into barbeque sauce and grilled until the sauce caramelizes.
