Blueberries are a luscious delightful fruit, which ripen during warm weather and, therefore, are subjected to getting overripe or rotting easily. Since this fruit is small in size and is harvested in bulk, it is important to identify rotten blueberry so that you do not end up consuming bad fruit and falling ill.

Blueberries are basically purplish blue in color, with just a hint of red. If you find the blueberries to be more red or deep purple, they are either not ripe or rotting, so, discard them.

Blueberries are packed inside a very delicate skin, therefore, check them for any kind of crack or leakage. In case the fruit is cracked or leaking fluid from these cracks, it is overripe and unfit for consumption.

Since this fruit grows up in bushes, it is subjected to all variety of weather and growing conditions, one of which could be the mold. Moldy blueberries develop a sort of fuzziness on their exterior, which, though, can be brushed off, but most often, such fruit should not be consumed.

If you touch a blueberry and it gives way, it is overripe. Also if the blueberries look shriveled to you, these are rotten. The ripe and right blueberries are just plump but firm.

Blueberries are used in a lot of dishes, including muffins, cakes and spreads and while slightly overripe blueberries can be used for cakes and spreads but rotten  blueberry should have no place in your cooking.
