You must be using zucchini squash or zucchini almost every other week but have you ever wondered how to identify rotten zucchini? Well, here are some tips to help you do that because eating rotten zucchini may cause serious illness.
Check the skin
Check the zucchini surface for any abnormal signs like discoloration or graying. If you find light spots over zucchini surface, it is rotten. The signs may be due to bacterial growth or mildewing. In either case, the vegetable is not fit for consumption. Also check the surface for any scars, lesions or damage.
Rotten zucchini gives out rotten odor, which is not natural. Since most of us identify the squash smell, it is easy to tell whether the vegetable is rotten or not simply by smelling it.
Pick the zucchini in your hand and squeeze it. If the zucchini is infested inside or diseased, it will crumbled in your hand. On the other hand, too hard a zucchini is also not good for consumption because it may still be unripe. The fresh zucchini should be just firm.
If the vegetable shows any signs of discoloration on the inside, then the flesh is rotten. In case portions of the flesh show jelly-like consistency, that also means the vegetable is spoilt.
