How to Buy Baker's Yeast
Find out how to buy yeast on this lesson of Grocery School.
Baking homemade bread requires making homemade dough and dough wont rise without yeast.
Unfortunately, varieties of yeast are available in the grocery shop. So, here we are helping you in deciding which one is really good for your recipe.
• Make sure you buy baker’s yeast, not brewer’s yeast or flaky yeast. Brewer yeast is used for making homemade beer. Flaky yeast is dead yeast and is strictly used as a nutritional supplement. It has no leavening power, it wont make your bread rise at all.
• 2 types of baker’s yeast are available; fresh baker’s yeast and dry baker’s yeast. Fresh baker’s yeast is generally sold in the refrigerate section of your grocery store. These are perishable and sold in cube shape. Dry baker’s yeast is sold in the dry baking section of the grocery shop. These are sold in yeast powder form or in little envelops.
• Instant rise/rapid rise yeast doesn’t change your recipe. In most of the cases, instant rise yeast is added as leavening accelerator to make the dough rise faster. Dough made with rapid rise yeast will be ready to bake in about half the time.
