Surprise Sausage Sticks
|Milk||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|Shortening||1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs)|
|Self rising flour||2 3⁄4 Cup (44 tbs)|
|Sharp cheddar cheese||1⁄2 Pound|
|Melted butter||1 Tablespoon|
Cook sausages until lightly browned; set aside.
Scald milk; add shortening, sugar and 1/4 cup cold water, mixing well.
Cool to lukewarm.
Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water; add to lukewarm milk mixture, mixing well.
Add flour gracuaMy, about 1/2 cup at a time; mix well to form dough.
Turn out onto lightly floured board.
Knead for 3 minutes or until smooth.
Place in greased bowl; cover with towel.
Let rise in warm place for 30 minutes or until doubled in bulk.
Punch dough down; turn out on lightly floured board.
Knead for 3 minutes.
Roll dough into 16-inch square.
Cut into sixteen 4-inch squares.
Place sausage in center of each square.
Cut cheese into 32 strips, 3 1/2x1/4 inches wide.
Add two strips of cheese, 1 on each side of sausage.
Fold dough over sausage and cheese; press edges together.
Place, seam sides down, 1 inch apart on greased baking sheet.
Cover lightly; let rise for 20 minutes.
Bake in 425-degree oven for 12 minutes.
Brush with melted butter; serve hot.
