Tofu Sauce

 

Tofu sauce is a condiment prepared using tofu as a base ingredient. This sauce is popular in South Asian countries where it is paired with various kinds of noodle, meat and vegetable preparations. Some of the popular sauce variations are created by cooking tofu with vegetables in peanut sauce.

 

Tofu Sauce Recipes

  • Creamy Tofu Sauce for Sweet Potatoes and Konnyaku ( a kind of potato found in Eastern Asian countries of Japan, Indonesia and China) – This recipe was submitted by Karen Resta as a part of her essay ‘A Modern Woman’s Thanksgiving’. Karen has projected this sauce as one of the modern Thanksgiving sauces.

    Ingredients – Silken tofu, sweet light miso, salt, and mirin are used in the preparation of this sauce.

    Method of Preparation – Tofu is cooked in boiling water and drained. Cooked tofu is added to the food processor and pulsed with other ingredients until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy. This sauce is usually refrigerated for about 3 days before using.

 

  • Tofu, Ginger, and Sesame Sauce – This sauce can be served as a condiment or side dish depending on its utility. According to Kate who devised this recipe, the sauce is best served when drizzled over grilled vegetables.

    Ingredients – Fresh ginger, jalapeno chile, garlic cloves, fresh cilantro, tahini, dark sesame oil, fresh lime juice, silken tofu, salt, and pepper are required to make this sauce.

    Method of Preparation – Ingredients like ginger, chilies, garlic cloves, cilantro, tahini, dark sesame oil and lime juice are blended in a food processor. Salt and tofu are added to the food processor and blended until smooth and a green colored sauce is produced. Seasoning is adjusted as per the taste preferences of individuals. If the sauce is thick, then it can be lightened by the addition of boiled water. The sauce is served after refrigerating.

 

  • Tofu Spaghetti Sauce – This sauce is very popular throughout Italy and Asian variations of this sauce are created by replacing some typical ingredients with local ingredients found in many of the Asian countries.

    Ingredients – Tofu, tomato sauce, tomatoes, Italian seasoning or oregano, thyme and basil, pepper beef flavored bouillon, mushrooms, onion, garlic cloves, and olive oil are required to make this sauce.

    Method of Preparation – The sauce preparation begins by sautéing minced garlic and onion in olive oil. Rest of the ingredients are added to the sauce and boiled and simmered for long time.

    Tips – The sauce is served by pouring over spaghetti or other pasta. Minor variations can be made to the recipe to make it suitable for noodle dishes. The Italian ingredients can be replaced with Asian ingredients.  

 

  • Tofu and Broccoli in Peanut Sauce – This dish is best served during holiday meals because its preparation is done in two steps. Peanut sauce is prepared by combining peanut butter, hot water, cider vinegar, soy sauce, and apple juice concentrate. The ingredients are cooked in low heat. The vegetables like fresh broccoli, ginger, garlic, tofu, onion, chopped peanuts, soy sauce, and scallions are cooked in a skillet and combined with the peanut sauce to complete dish. The sauce is usually served with freshly steamed rice after topping with scallops.
