Onion Sauce

 

Onion sauce is   prepared using onion as a base ingredient. Sauces made of onion are integral to almost all cuisines on earth. Various kinds of sauce are prepared using green onions, sweet onions, red onions, white onions, shallots, or a combination of all these onion variants. The resultant sauces can have intense burgundy colored texture to pale texture depending on the variant of onion used in its preparation. The sauces may taste spicy, hot or sweet depending on the taste preferences of individuals. The onion sauces are usually served as an accompaniment for snacks, cheeses, meat dishes, curries and sometimes as a pairing.

 

Popular Onion Sauce Recipes   

 

  • Easy Onion Sauce – A regular condiment in most of the American homes where it is served with white meats.

    Ingredients – Milk, onions, Dijon mustard, butter, corn flour, salt and black pepper are required to make this dish.

    Method of Preparation – Onion is cooked in salt water until it turns soft. Butter is clarified in a pan and flour, milk are added to it to form a paste. The cooked onions are added to the white sauce and flavored with black pepper, Dijon mustard, salt and cooked until the sauce thickens.

    Tip – The flavors of sauce are enhanced by the addition of grated raw onions.

 

  • Onion Chutney – This term is usually associated with strong sauces that are integral to Indian culinary traditions. The onion chutneys are usually served with breakfast dishes like Idli, chutney or with rotis (Indian flatbread made up of wheat flour). Sometimes vinegar and sugar is also added to the chutney to make it more flavorsome. 

    Ingredients – The onion chutney recipes largely vary from family to family and from region to region.  Onion and red chili flakes are commonly used in the preparation of chutney. 

    Method of Preparation – Onion chutney using red pepper flakes and onions can be prepared in two ways.

    - By crushing the onions and chilies using mortar and pestle.
    - By sautéing the onions with pepper flakes in little oil and then grinding the mixture 

    In both ways the chutney is served after seasoning with salt and little vegetable oil.

 

  • French Onion Sauce – A creamy sauce from France which is enriched by the addition of Parmesan cheese and butter.

    Ingredients – Cornstarch, onions, butter, condensed beef broth, Worcestershire sauce and grated Parmesan cheese are used in the preparation of sauce.

    Method of Preparation – Onions are browned by sautéing in butter and cooked with Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth. The sauce is enriched with the addition of Parmesan cheese and is seasoned with salt –pepper.

 

  • Kiwi Onion Sauce – This sauce is usually served with Bulgogi – a Korean marinated beef.

    Ingredients – Onion, kiwi fruit, soy sauce, rice wine, cider vinegar, sugar, black pepper and sesame oil are the ingredients used in the preparation of kiwi onion sauce.

    Method of Preparation – The sauce preparation begins by pureeing kiwi and onions in food processor or blender. Peppers and soy sauce and sesame oil are added in a gradual manner. The seasonings can be adjusted by the addition of soy sauce. Sugar can be added for enriching the sweetness of sauce.

    Tip – Some recipes suggest using toasted sesame oil, whereas fresh sesame oil is always preferred for the preparation of this sauce.
