Combine 1/2 pound commercial vanilla caramels and 1/2 cup milk in metal or ceramic fondue pot.
Heat over direct moderate heat and stir until caramels melt and sauce is smooth.
Remove from heat; stir in 1/4 teaspoon maple flavoring or 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
