Baked Asparagus With Almond Cheese Sauce
|Asparagus||1 1⁄2 Pound|
|Butter/Margarine||1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs)|
|Soft bread cubes||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|All purpose flour||2 Tablespoon|
|Milk||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Shredded sharp cheddar cheese||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Toasted slivered almonds||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
Wash and trim asparagus and cook in boiling salted water until tender.
Drain; arrange in 9-inch piepan or other greased small shallow baking dish.
Melt butter in saucepan and add 2 tablespoons to bread cubes, mixing well to coat.
Blend flour into remainder.
Add milk and cook, stirring, until smooth and thickened.
Stir in cheese, almonds, and salt and pepper to taste.
Pour over asparagus and sprinkle with bread cubes.
Bake in preheated moderate oven (350 F.) about 20 minutes
