Peel the onion and stud with the cloves.
Put the onion and bay leaf into a saucepan and cover with the milk.
Let it simmer on a low heat for a half hour, to draw out the flavor of the onion.
Remove the onion and bay leaf.
Boil up the milk and add the breadcrumbs.
Stir gently to let the breadcrumbs absorb the milk.
Add seasonings, butter, and cream and serve as soon as possible.
This sauce gets pasty if it is left too long.
