Spread the slices of bread with butter and use the cheese to make two sandwiches.
Trim off all the crusts.
Dip each sandwich in the milk, then in the flour seasoned with salt and pepper.
Beat together the egg and oil then dip the sandwiches into this mixture.
Ensure that each sandwich is well coated and all the edges are secure.
Fill a deep fat fryer half full with oil and heat to 180Â°C/350Â°F (or when a piece of bread browns in just over 1 minute).
Cook the sandwiches one at a time, turning once to ensure even browning.
Serve immediately with tomato sauce or pickle.
