Golden Onion & Ham Sandwiches
|Butter/Margarine||1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs)|
|Rye bread slice||6|
|German mustard||1⁄2 Teaspoon|
|Thin black forest slices/Baked ham||6 Ounce (Westphalian)|
|Swiss cheese slice||5 Ounce (6 Slices)|
|Coarsely ground pepper||To Taste|
Thinly slice onions and separate into rings.
Melt butter in a wide frying pan over medium heat.
Add onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until very soft and golden about 25 minutes.
About 5 minutes before onions are done, place bread in a single layer on a large baking sheet.
Broil about 4 inches below heat, turning once, until toasted about 2 minutes.
Spread each slice with mustard; add one slice each of the ham and cheese.
Return to oven and broil until cheese is melted about 1 minute.
Spoon onions equally atop each sandwich.
Season to taste with pepper.
