Seven 7 Layer Salad

allesandra's picture
Seven (7) layer salad is one of the easiest salads to prepare. Most importantly, it is probably the most tasty too.
Ingredients
Lettuce   , dressing (cheddar cheese you also choose a of your liking i like the garlic salad peas bacon this is if you are a vegetarian you choose to omit this from the list of ingredients egg)
Directions

As the name suggests, seven (7) layer salad is made of seven layers, thus, you would need a large bowl or pan to stack up the layers. Lets start from bottom up (duhh!)

- Chop the lettuce in small pieces. I typically rinse it with some salad dressing.
- Take frozen peas. Rinse with water and top the lettuce with a thin layer. I know some people who are not very fond of peas, so suit yourself.
- The next layer, typically, is bacon - usually my favorite part. If you are a vegetarian, you can choose to skip this.
- The next layer in the salad is well chopped tomatoes. Fairly straight forward. I would add some more salad dressing to this layer to keep the taste uniform
- Slice the boiled eggs and add that as the next layer. Make sure that your eggs are hard boiled.
- Top off with grated cheddar cheese.
- I would add some more peas to top off the salad.

I am told that you should let this seven (7) layer salad sit for about an hour before serving. I wouldnt let this sit for too long though; nothing more than 3-4 hours. Dont forget to stir before serving.

Story
I was introduced to the classic seven (7) layer salad almost about seven years ago when I was still in grad school. It was a warm Saturday afternoon; a school picnic. I was a meataterian back then and almost despised the idea of eating veggies. Salad for me was only for women who ate salad and lettuce more to keep themselves in shape than for the enlightenment of their taste buds. I had too much to drink that afternoon and by the time I made it to the lunch table, there wasnt any left. It was the much disliked seven (7) layer salad that came to my rescue. Much to my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I wasnt quite sure if it was because I was hungry or if it was the salad that was yummy. Until a few week ago, I believed it was the former. Seven years later with me seven years older, a lot has changed. During a recent pot-luck, a fried of mine made this delicious seven layer salad and I was all too excited to try it again. Not only that, I tried this seven (7) layer salad just a few days ago, and couldnt wait to share the recipe with you all.

Actually, another name for this salad is the 24 hour salad, so letting it sit for 12-24 hours covered in the refrigerator is preferred.

If you let it sit for 12-24 hrs, wouldnt it become soggy ?

You can't add the dressing to the layers as suggested. Just put the dressing on top, let it sit for 24 hours and you're good to go!
