Hammerhead Shark On Display

CookingMyWay's picture

This was a real hammerhead shark they had at the show. As you will hear in the background some lady was telling me that when they are babies they are pink - it's because of their 100% diet of shrimp? I've heard that if you eat too many tomatoes your skin will turn a shade of red - carrots will turn you orange... This was an impressive display but on a personal note - I strongly believe that if you're going to kill it you should have the respect to eat the animal not just let it go to waste...

Commercial fisheries catch hammerheads for their oil, meat and skin. At certain times of the year, scalloped hammerheads swim in schools of several hundred animals—unusual behavior for predators at the top of the food chain. This schooling pattern makes them easy prey for fishermen targeting large catches. Also a popular sport fishery, hammerheads are caught accidentally by longlining crews fishing for swordfish and tuna. for more info one of the foremost sites on sea life, sustainability etc. http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/efc/living_species/default.asp?hab=3&hOri=0&inhab=459

Many times, and I think it's quite good. I don't see it on many menus here in Florida, however one of local fish markets has it on hand every once in a while. It's really good on the grill!
