Curry Puff

Curry puff is a very popular Malaysian snack that is basically a pie stuffed with baked or deep fried potatoes and chicken. Apart from Malaysia, a variation of this snack is also popular in Thai and Singaporean cuisine. This delicious snack has a thick curry, soft spicy feeling and a puffy patty shell. However, this puff can be prepared with different types of fillings. Looks quite similar to popular Indian snack called as samosa, this puff has different filling ingredients based on different regions and personal preferences. This snack is widely served as a snack or appetizer during cocktail parties.

 

Origin of Curry Puff

Curry puff was invented by the Portuguese chefs for the first time in the year 1511. At that time, this delicious and light snack was named as Empanada. Later, the snack gained popularity in other parts of the world and various other versions of the dish were invented. Soon, the Malaysian, Thai and Singaporean cuisines also made their own versions of this light and puffy snack.

 

Curry Puff Recipe- Ingredients

The snack is made by using some regular household ingredients that can be divided into two groups. First list of ingredients are used for making the pastry and the second list of ingredients are required for making the filling. The ingredients needed for making the pastry are plain flour, salt, baking soda, clarified butter, slightly beaten eggs and water. Other than these, some ingredients are required to make the filling for the snack. These ingredients consist of chopped lean beef, diced potatoes, chopped onions, Malaysian curry powder, chili powder, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, vegetable oil, salt, pepper and water.

 

Curry Puff Recipe- Preparation

This is mainly a baked snack that is essentially made in two parts, the pastry and the filling. The pastry is usually prepared by baking the dough of plain flour in an oven. Ideally, the oven should be pre-heated at the temperature of 350 degrees C for about 30 to 40 minutes. On the other hand, the filling is simply prepared by mixing all the ingredients and cooking them on medium flame for just about 2 to 3 minutes. Properly baked curry puff is identified with its perfect golden brown color.
