Date Nut Pudding

Ingredients
  Granulated sugar 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
  Butter 3 Tablespoon
  All purpose flour 1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs), sifted
  Baking powder 1 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Ground cinnamon 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Salt 1⁄8 Teaspoon
  Milk 3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)
  Pitted dates 1 Cup (16 tbs), chopped
  Walnuts 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs), chopped
  Vanilla 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Orange rind 1⁄2 Teaspoon, grated
  Boiling water 2 Cup (32 tbs)
  Firmly packed brown sugar 1 Cup (16 tbs)
Directions

1. Mix granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon of the butter or margarine in medium-size bowl.
2. Sift flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt onto waxed paper; blend into sugar mixture alternately with milk. Stir in dates, walnuts, vanilla and orange rind; pour into a buttered 9x9x2-inch pan. Combine water, brown sugar and remaining 2 tablespoons butter or margarine in small saucepan; heat until bubbling; pour over batter.
3. Bake in moderate oven (350°) for 45 minutes, or until the top is sticky-firm.
