In heavy 1 1/2-quart saucepan combine milk, uncooked rice, sugar, raisins (if desired), vanilla, and salt.
Bring to boiling.
Reduce heat and cook, covered, over very low heat till rice is tender and milk is absorbed, 45 to 50 minutes; stir frequently.
