How to Replace Sesame Oil
If your dish calls for sesame oil and you require a substitute you must not fret instead you must know how to replace sesame oil. Whether you want the intensely nutty flavor offered by dark sesame oil or the subtler essence offered by light sesame oil, you can decide as per your taste preferences.
Replace Dark Sesame Oil
- You can replace dark sesame oil with peanut or canola oil. These oils must be added in the same quantity as sesame oil. These oils mimic sesame oil in consistency as well as smoke points.
- You can replace up to 3 tbsp. of dark sesame oil with 1/4 cup of toasted sesame seeds. Place the seeds inside a dry frying pan over high heat. Shake the pan in order to spread the seeds uniformly.
- Watch and smell the sesame seeds. They will turn brown while they are cooked and their nutty aroma will be intensified. The seeds must be removed from the heat when they turn golden brown and also smell toasted. This will take about 2 to 4 minutes.
- Add 1 tsp. of these toasted seeds to your dish and then taste your recipe. You may add more of the seeds if you want a stronger sesame flavor.
Replacing Light Sesame Oil
- Light sesame oil can be substituted by peanut or canola oil in similar quantities as called for in the recipe.
- Add 1 tbsp. raw sesame seeds to the dish that you are preparing. Taste it and then you may add more to taste. The sesame seeds must not be added to oil used for frying. They can be added to the dough, glaze, or accompanying sauce.
- Sesame seeds can be replaced by roasted peanuts or toasted almonds for a different flavor. 1/4 cup of the nuts can either be grinded or chopped. Add about 1 tbsp. of the nuts to your recipe. Taste it and then you may add more nuts, if required.
