How to Substitute Tomato in a Recipe
Tomatoes!!! Tomato sauce, Tomato powder, Tomato Juice, Tomato Paste......they seem to be everywhere and in every recipe! If you don't know how to substitute tomato in a recipe then you have come to the right place.I have experimented in the kitchen a number of times to get the right substitute for these vegetables which provides a tangy taste and a lovely color to the recipe. Here are a few tips that will help you substitute tomato and its derivatives in a recipe.
To Substitute Tomatoes - To get the exact substitute for tomatoes is quiet difficult but I have tried replacing it with the following ingredients with some success.
Roasted or jarred red peppers- they easily mimic the color of the tomatoes but offer a slightly different taste. This sweet substitute is perfect to add to your sandwiches and the puree of the same makes a tasty paste base for pizzas.
Squash, zucchini and tomatillos can also be used in place of tomatoes. You can use them after they have been cooked and pureed or cooked and diced depending on how tomato is used in the recipe. The same goes for zucchini and tomatillos.
If it is the Lycopene content and it's antioxidant properties that you are trying to preserve then you can substitute tomatoes in your diet with watermelon, beans (red, black, pinto, kidney), blue berries, and even coffee.
NOTE: Donât forget to add a little extra water, when using alternate vegetables in place of tomatoes. Also, to get the tangy taste of tomatoes in your dish you can add tamarind water. This is made by soaking a lime sized ball of tamarind in warm water and then straining out the water after ten minutes.
To Substitute Tomato Juice â If you have tomato sauce or tomato paste at home you can easily whip up a substitute for tomato juice. Mix 1/2 cup of tomato sauce with 1/2 cup of water or simply mix together 3 tablespoons of tomato paste with 1 cup of water to give you 1 cup of tomato juice. You can also use vinegar in place of tomato juice. The tomato juice or liquid that oozes out of the tomato when cooked can be replaced with chicken or beef broth or improvise and use the other liquids already used in the recipe.
To Substitute Tomato Sauce - Tomato sauce can also be made at home by diluting 1/4 cup of tomato paste with 1 and 1/4 cups of water. Walla!! Now you have 2 cups of tomato sauce to use. You can also use the puree of squash or zucchini in recipes that call for tomato sauce as mentioned before. You just have to ensure that the sauce made is of the same consistency as that of the tomato sauce. You can also simply use other kind of sauces when tomato sauce is called for in your recipe. For example beef gravy can be used to convert goulash to stroganoff and thick mushroom or chicken soup can be used to convert spanish rice to creamy rice. Just ensure that you season the dish carefully as usually recipes that use tomato sauces use strong seasoning but this doesnât suit all sauces.
To Substitute Canned Tomatoes - Use fresh tomatoes! Simply cut up 1 and 1/3 cups of fresh tomatoes and simmer it for 10 minutes to get 1 cup of canned tomatoes.
