Growing Leeks

Growing leeks is relatively easy while you get the opportunity of getting tasty, flavorful, nutritious vegetables straight from your backyard without having to dole out extra dollars for it. Now, isn’t that an excellent reason for growing the vegetable? All you have to do is to learn how to grow leeks. Let’s find out…

Items Required

  • Leek plants and seeds

  • Prunners

  • Spades and Trowel

  • Mulch

  • Compost Makers

  • Fertilizers

How To Grow Leeks

  1. The first step involves selecting the proper site which receives an adequate quantity of sun and is well drained with a pH between 6.5 to 7.0.

  2. Tiny leek plants that have sprouted from seeds can be bought and planted after the frost. Alternatively you can also start growing them from the seeds yourself indoors a good ten weeks before the frost season is over.

  3. The hardened plants grown indoors can then be safely transplanted in the garden. The ideal spacing between the plants is 4-8 inches although you can alter it according to your needs.

  4. Dig out a deep hole into the ground with the aid of a dibble or rake and plant the tiny sapling with only the top inch remaining exposed. The entire hole is required to be covered with lose soil.

  5. Water them adequately taking care to see that they receive an inch of water every week.

  6. Mulch the soil to keep it moist and spray with manure tea every month.

  7. Harvesting the leeks become mandatory once they grow properly. The young ones are eaten as salads while the tougher ones taste better when cooked.

Tips for Growing Leeks

  • Thin plants result when the spacing between the leek plants is reduced.

  • Buying disease free plants is mandatory as the leek plants are prone to pink roots which turns the roots a bright pink or red in color stunting their growth.

Be prepared to cook up a storm once you get to master the process of growing leeks.
