Things needed for making buttercream icing

Before I tell you how to make buttercream icing, I should tell you the things you will need to go about with this culinary act. So, arrange for some butter, a mixer, some powdered sugar, milk and vanilla essence.

Instructions on how to make buttercream icing

  1. Begin with your buttercream icing by adding the vanilla essence and powdered sugar to the mixer. The amount of your buttercream will actually depend on how much icing will be needed for your baked good. Generally, the measurement is a cup of powdered sugar for every single stick of butter and a quarter teaspoon of vanilla essence with just enough milk for making a smooth and creamy mixture.
  2. Now, if your butter has been in refrigerator, soften it by standing it at room temperature for 30 minutes to an hour. Soft butter will make it easier for you to blend the ingredients for the icing. However, make sure that you do not melt the butter to an oily consistency by warming it. The butter should be soft enough to yield a smooth and creamy textured icing.
  3. Next, turn on the mixer at its slowest setting. Blend the butter and the powdered sugar at the first stage of mixing. Allow the ingredients to blend in slowly inside the mixer. The process might take a little longer, but keep up the patience and expect the best results.
  4. Pause the mixer and drizzle in little amounts of milk to the mixture. Then, turn on the mixer again at its lowest speed. Keep following this method of pouring little quantity of milk from time to time until the buttercream icing reaches a spreadable consistency. Abstain from the temptation of adding more milk at a go as it can make the mixture thin. However, in case you have added a lot of milk accidentally and the cream has thinned, you can add more powdered sugar to retrieve back the thick icing.
