Pear Port Soup

|Peeled cored and chopped ripe anjou pears||3 Pound (About 8 Cups)|
|Sugar||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Tawny port||5 Cup (80 tbs)|
|Water||1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs)|
Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and simmer for 45 minutes, uncovered, until the pears are tender enough to be easily mashed with a wooden spoon.
Puree in a food processor or blender and chill for at least 2 hours before serving.
