Pot Pie

Pot pie is a delicious salty flavored pie that has a flaky outside crust and consists of a pie tin. The pie tin is placed inside the crusts to retain the appropriate shape. A popular British version of pastries, this pie usually has a meat filling with thick gravy. Moreover, these pies are largely available in the market in frozen single packs. This dish can be described as a perfect combination of a flaky top part, heavy body from inside, short size crusts and similar pastry.

Pot pie is popular American pie that is made by using some basic ingredients, which include butter, salt, dried thyme, dried & crushed rosemary, pinch black pepper, bay leaf, turkey broth, flour, frozen peas, chopped cooked turkey, 9-inch pie crusts and milk. Apart from all these, some fresh chopped vegetables such as chopped sweet onion, chopped carrots, potatoes, celery, are also needed.

 

Pot Pie Recipe - Preparation

Pot pie dishes mainly follow the baking method where the dish is prepared by baking batter until the top part becomes golden brown. After preparing the pie with proper filling, it is then placed in a pre-heated oven for about 10 to 15 minutes at the temperature of 400 F.   

 

Popular Variations of Pot Pie

There are a large number of variations of this pit which is reflected in different cooking traditions. For example, the American version of this dish has no crust at the bottom and seems very similar to the popular baked casserole dishes such as dumplings. These American pies are made by spacing dollops of small size onto the filling that is very similar to stew. These dollops of drop biscuits are placed before baking the dish in an oven. This is done as there is no top crust remaining on the pie that can offer some support to the shape.   

Similarly, Pennsylvania Dutch region also has its own version. Known as "bot boi" or "bott boi", this dish is widely consumed by people of Deitsh-speaking countries. Prepared by using ham, chicken, beef, egg noodles, stock of onion, potatoes, carrots or optional celery and parsley, this pie is made like a stew. The egg noodles are mainly prepared by using flour scratch, salt and eggs. Leavening agents like baking powder are also used in some of the versions of pot pie.
