Nine Day Pickles

Ingredients
  Vinegar 1 Quart (Heintz Brand)
  Mustard seed 2 Tablespoon
  Allspice 2 Tablespoon
  Peppercorns 2 Tablespoon
  Ginger root pieces 2
  Mace 2 Ounce (2 Blades)
  Horseradish roots 2
  Brown sugar 2 Pound
  Whole cloves 1 Teaspoon
  Cinnamon stick 1
  Bay leaves 6
  Mixed spices 8 Ounce (1 Package)
  Malt vinegar 2 Gallon (Heintz Brand Brand, I Boil My Spices And Quart Of Vinegar Together A Second Time)
Directions

Wash and brush several dozen small cucumbers.
Make a brine of 1 cup of salt to 1 gallon water.
Bring to a boil and pour over cucumbers.
Let stand three days and repeat.
Let stand another three days.
Then pour off brine and take one gallon boiling water and a good sized piece of alum and soak again for another six hours.
Drain and wash well.
Bring the 2 gallons of vinegar to boiling point and add above mixture on the 9th day.
Pour over cucumbers.
Keep in covered stone jar.
Add horse radish and ginger roots when vinegar is cool.
