Here are a few spices that can perk up both your meals and your health.


Tumeric


It is peppery, warm and bitter tasting. It is an excellent anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and has cholesterol-lowering abilities as well. This spice works well with lentils and grain recipes. Very popular in Indian dishes.


Cinnamon


Often an ingredient used in baked goods. It is a good source of calcium and iron. It also has an essential mineral that naturally boosts the effect of insulin. Due to this fact, cinnamon can be an important key supplement for those with diabetes.


Pepper


Preferrably use the freshly grounded peppercorns, the taste is so much better. Pepper stimulates your tastebuds which fuels the acid in your stomach and helps with digestion. It is an anti-oxidant and helps battle diseases such as cancer. It is best to add pepper to a dish at the end of preparation,  it loses its aroma and flavour when it is cooked too long.


Coriander/Cilantro


Did you know that this comes from the same plant? It is considered a double spice.The leafy part is the cilantro and it has a very distinct aroma and taste (use in salsas, tomato sauces, guacamole, chutneys,salads). The root part is the coriander (dried seeds), it has more of a lemony flavour. The coriander soothes the stomach and can help lower blood-sugar levels, which again can be very helpful to people with diabetes.


Chili Peppers


You can purchase them fresh, dried or powdered. Chilis help to improve circulation, especially beneficial to people with cold hands and feet. It actually helps to boost the flow of blood throughout the body. They are also known to clear stuffed noses and congested lungs. This spice can easily be added to any meal to give it that extra hot-and-spicy fiery punch (soups,pasta, stew) you may even choose to add some to hot chocolate.


Ginger


It has actually become popular for its ability to help relieve nausea with pregnant women. It can help with circulatory problems, as well as certain respiratory ailments. The gingerroot can easily be placed in the freezer and you can grate it fresh as needed. The powdered form is ideal for baking. If you are feeling under the weather, you can warm up some freshly squeezed orange juice and add ginger and honey to it...stir and enjoy!!!


Parsley


This leafy herb adds a wonderful taste to pesto, salads, soups and chicken dishes especially. It is rich in calcium, potassium, and silica (helps strengthen hair, nails and skin). It contains a specific oil that prevents tumour formation, especially in the lungs. It also contains flavonoids,which contain anti-oxidants and vitamins A and C and protect against rheumatoid arthritis.


Peppermint


You can purchase this herb as leaves, fresh or dried or as an oil. The oil can help relieve indigestion, colon spasms or muscle spasms. It may also help reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. You can easily add these leaves to lemonade, sprinkle on top of salads, any main dish can be topped off with the leaves of this amazing herb. You can make a quick wonderful tea with 1 Tbsp of dried peppermint leaves to 2/3 cups boiling water, let steep for 10 minutes.


Sage


This has a subtle, sweet flavour and comes in fresh, dried or powdered varieties. It can help with sore throats, laryngitis and tonsillitis. It can be used as a mouthwash to reduce infection or inflammation of the mouth, throat and gums (1 tsp. of dried sage to 1 cup of hot water and let it steep 15 minutes before swishing and gargling). It has recently been discovered that it may be of great help in boosting memory with Alzheimer disease.
