Peel, core, and slice pears (if sickle pears are used, they may be preserved whole).
In large kettle combine vinegar, sugar, and spices tied in a bag bring to a boil and add pears.
Cook until pears are tender and appear clear.
Remove with spoon carefully and pack pears into hot sterilized jars.
Continue boiling syrup until it becomes thick, then pour over pears and seal jars
