Preheat oven to 350° F.
In a flameproof dish combine sugar, 1 cup water, and nutmeg and bring to a boil.
Boil 5 minutes.
Insert cloves into pears.
Add pears to dish and bake about 50 minutes, or until tender, basting occasionally.
Remove cloves and transfer pears to serving dish.
Add brandy to sauce, stir, and heat over low flame 1 minute.
Pour sauce over pears.
