Lentil Pasta

 

Lentil pasta is a dish consisting of cooked pasta and a sauce made of lentils and other ingredients like onion, garlic, tomatoes, basil, stock and seasonings. The various ingredients are usually cooked together, by boiling, to make the sauce. It is a protein rich dish which is served hot as a starter, side or main dish. There are many popular variants of lentil pasta made by use of additional ingredients like kale, walnuts or sun dried tomatoes.

 

Method of Preparation of Lentil Pasta

Ingredients: Lentils, pasta, onions, tomatoes, tomato paste, stock, basil, salt and pepper are the commonly suggested ingredients by standard lentil pasta recipes.

 

Method of Preparation: To prepare the dish, lentils, chopped onions and tomatoes, tomato paste, stock, salt, pepper and basil leaves are taken in a saucepan and cooked together by boiling. Meanwhile, pasta is cooked in boiling salted water till al dente, after which it is drained. The hot pasta is then tossed with the lentil sauce to prepare the dish.

 

Serving Suggestions

Lentil pasta is served hot, and may be garnished with rosemary or basil sprig or with coriander leaves before serving. It may be served alongside garlic bread and salad. The dish is a versatile one and may be served as a starter, side or main dish.

 

Popular Lentil Pasta Recipe Variations

Lentil Pasta with Kale, Sun Dried Tomatoes and Feta Cheese: This version is made by tossing together over medium heat cooked pasta, cooked chopped kale, crumbled feta cheese, cooked lentils, olive oil, minced garlic, minced parsley, sliced sun dried tomatoes, grated Parmesan cheese, dried basil, salt and freshly ground pepper.

Pasta with Lentils, Red Peppers and Walnuts: This variant can be prepared by cooking together lentils, chopped red peppers, toasted walnuts, spinach and olive oil to prepare a sauce. Nutritional yeast, garlic powder and ketchup may also be included in the sauce which is served over cooked pasta.

Lentils are low in calories and a rich source of protein, which make up about 26% of the calories of lentils. They are also rich in dietary fiber, B vitamins and iron content. Lentil pasta incorporates these health benefits. A single serving of lentil pasta contains about 350 calories, though the exact calorie count varies with individual recipe.
