Melt the butter in a heavy frying pan and stir in the onions, coating well with butter.
Season to taste.
Cover and fry very gently over very low heat, stirring frequently, for 15 minutes.
Uncover the pan and fry for 20 minutes more or until the onions are golden and tender.
