Nutty Onions

Ingredients
  Onions 3 Large
  Freshly ground pepper 1 Teaspoon, divided
  Mozzarella cheese 8 Ounce, shredded (1 Package)
  Chopped pecans/Walnuts 1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs)
  Heavy cream 1 Cup (16 tbs)
  9 inch pie crust 1 (Unbaked)
  Egg yolk 1
  Water 1 Tablespoon
Directions

Preheat oven to 350°.
Slice onions into 1/4-inch thick rings.
Steam onions, rings intact, for 5 minutes.
Place 1/2 of the steamed onions in the bottom of casserole dish keeping rings intact.
Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon pepper over onions.
Layer 1/2 of the cheese over onions, nuts.
Layer remaining onions and then the cheese.
Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon pepper over layers the heavy cream.
Cover top of the dish with pie crust forming a rim around the edge.
Just before baking, beat egg yolk and water together and brush over pie crust.
Bake for 30-40 minutes.
