Skin the onions this can be done under cold water if they tend to make you weep. (Or you could wear a pair of goggles!)
Put the onions into a pot of boiling salted water and cook gently until they are tender.
You can test them by sticking a skewer down the center.
They generally take about 1 hour.
Lift them out of the water and drain well.
