Tuna Omelette

Tuna omelette is a fried egg dish consisting of tuna and egg as the vital ingredients. Tuna is basically a fish, therefore, this omelette is an ideal starting dish for the day for fish admirers. Generally, cooked or canned tuna is incorporated in tuna omelette; the brine, spices and sauces contained in the tuna juice are enough to season or flavor the egg. However, many other ingredients may be added to the omelette for extra taste.

Fresh or canned mushrooms, shredded cheese, chopped onion, chopped tomato, chopped bell pepper, minced garlic, herbs and spices are some of the commonly used ingredients in tuna omelette that add flavor to the dish as well as make it healthy.  

 

Herbs and spices that usually find their way in the tuna omelet recipe are oregano, parsley, thyme, cilantro, salt, black pepper and quite often red chili flakes. Chopped baby spinach is another ingredient that enhances the visual appeal of the dish as well as provides immense health benefits.

 

Preparation of the omelette starts with the beating of egg. Egg is either used with yolk or only white can be incorporated to make a low-calorie and low-cholesterol omelette. Generally, tuna is added to the beaten egg with its juices, as tuna is already cooked and does not require any prior sautéing or frying. Seasonings and herbs are also added to the tuna and egg mixture. The other ingredients such as chopped vegetables are stir-fried in hot oil in a skillet. Oil used may be olive oil avocado oil or any other vegetable oil. Butter may also be used for few variations, but it may add calories to the dish.

 

Once the ingredients are stir-fried the egg mixture is poured over them in the skillet and cooked from one side until completely set. It is necessary to cook the omelette from both the sides therefore with the help of a spatula, the egg is flipped within the skillet and allowed to cook from the other side as well. When the omelette is cooked and browned from both the sides it is ready to serve.

 

The omelette can be prepared with baking method as well.

Although omelettes are classically served as breakfast, the change in eating habits has brought many changes in serving of dishes. Tuna omelette and several other meat and vegetable omelettes are now the ideal dishes in brunches, lunches and dinner meals. The main accompaniments served with the tuna omelette are ketchup, toasted bread, stir-fried mixed greens and fried potatoes. This omelette even tastes good when served over a bed of fried rice.

Tuna is packed with omega-3 fatty acids and hence beneficial for consumption, but salty brine and high cholesterol present in tuna makes the dish an occasional eats. However, without salt, tuna can be incorporated to get a low-sodium tuna omelette. In additional to tuna, egg is always a good source of protein and provides immense health benefits if consumed without yolk, as yolk contains the high cholesterol.
