Prawn Omelette

Prawn omelette is a seafood omelette consisting of prawns and beaten egg as the central ingredients. The delicate seafood flavor of prawns merges well with the egg and this omelette is generally cooked with very minimal seasonings.

Although all varieties of prawns such as king prawn and tiger prawn are very commonly used in omelette recipes in different cuisines, the non-kosher character of this seafood makes it restricted in Jewish cuisine. However, other Islamic cuisines largely use the prawns due to the status of halal given to the prawns by ‘The Muslim School of law’ known as Madhhab. Asian and American cuisines are also famous for some of the best prawn omelette recipes.

Some of the most popular prawn omelette recipes are Asian style Prawn omelette, crispy omelette with prawns and prawn and cheese omelette.

Prawn Omelette Recipe Overview

Prawns are shelled and divined before adding to the omelette or any other dish. Cleaning and washing of prawns is also extremely important. Other ingredients that may be added to the egg with prawns are chopped garlic, chopped tomato, chopped onion, salt, black pepper, thyme, parsley, celery and quite often thyme. Herbs may either be used dried or fresh depending upon the availability. Cheese is also one of the popular add-on, although it is high in calories.

Similar to the preparation of other omelettes, the most commonly employed cooking method for prawn omelette is frying. However, baking is also one of the cooking methods employed in making omelettes often known as ‘quiche’. At the beginning, the divined prawns are sautéed in hot butter or oil along with chopped vegetables, seasonings and herbs. Meanwhile, eggs are beaten with extra seasonings until frothy. Milk is a very popular ingredient to be added while beating the egg in order to get a resultant omelette extremely light and airy.

The sautéed prawn mixture is either combined with the beaten egg or taken away from the pan and kept aside until the egg is poured in the pan and begin to set. The separately kept prawn mixture is spread over the moist and uncooked side of the egg. Omelette is flipped in the pan and allowed to cook from the stuffed side until browned. Again the omelette flipping is repeated and shredded cheese is sprinkled over it. The prawn omelette is either folded or served as flat omelette.
