Mozzarella Omelette

Mozzarella omelette is an appetizing omelet with creamy mozzarella cheese stuffing filled in the fried egg. Although mozzarella cheese can be shredded and sprinkled over almost all kinds of omelets, the variant consisting of only mozzarella cheese and minimal seasonings is able to bring out the real moist feel and creamy flavor of this Italian cheese.

There are different types of mozzarella cheeses and all of them are widely used in making omelettes and several other dishes such as lasagna and pastas. Here are the varieties of mozzarella cheese that are typically incorporated in Mozzarella omelettes:

  • Buffalo mozzarella – the one made with the milk of buffalo.
  • Mozzarella fior di latte – both unpasteurized and pasteurized fresh milk of cow are used to make this variety of mozzarella.
  • Low-moisture cheese – it is typically prepared with skimmed cow milk.
  • Smoked mozzarella

Even pre-shredded mozzarella is also largely sold commercially. It can be spread over the ready omelette for a cheesy finish.

Mozzarella Omelette Recipe Overview

Used either in cubed form or in shredded form, mozzarella tastes best when used fresh. The high-moisture content of this cheese provides the extra cheesy texture to the omelette when cheese melts.

Besides mozzarella, some of the other elements that complement the dish are onion, garlic, mushroom, meats, vegetables, herbs and seasonings. Mostly used vegetables are bell pepper, spinach, tomatoes and peas. Among the meats, chicken, pork, turkey and sausages are highly popular. Thyme, rosemary, chive and dill are the flavor enhancing herbs that even make the dish healthy. Black pepper and salt are the popular seasonings used.

All the ingredients except egg and cheese are sautéed either in olive oil or butter until tender and fully cooked. Meats may be cooked prior to making the omelette. Vegetables should also be cut into small pieces for even and fast cooking. Sautéed ingredients are seasoned with herbs and spices followed by the pouring of beaten egg in the pan. The egg is browned from both the sides by flipping the omelette from time to time. Once the omelette is ready, the shredded mozzarella cheese is sprinkled in large quantity over the top and the omelette is folded. Mozzarella cheese cubes may also be used and kept within the folded omelette to melt. The heat inside the omelette makes the cheese to melt.

Serving and Eating of Mozzarella Omelette

This omelette should be served immediately as melted cheese would loose its texture if not eaten fresh. It is generally served whole without cutting into slices because melted cheese may come out from small slices.
