colored veggies for Holi

Colors are the best way to celebrate any festival so why should Holi be any different? In case you are still not decided, here is how you can celebrate Holi with a dash of colors, not only in the literal sense but also in terms of your food. The fact remains that various colors are associated with various health properties, which you can incorporate into your daily diet to benefit from them. So, why not use Holi as an excuse and bring in some colorful goodness of the following fruits and vegetables into your Holi menu:

1) Reds

Red is the color of vibrancy and also that of tomatoes, red grapes, pomegranates, capsicum, and apples. That is because the red-colored fruits and vegetables help your body fight prostate cancer, heart diseases, infertility (in case of males), and diabetes. Doctors say that the lycopene and anthocyanin chemicals present in these fruits and veggies are antioxidant-rich, and, therefore, help your body stabilize or defuse the free radicals that cause cellular damage if left unchecked.

2) Yellow/Orange

Going beyond that customary glass of OJ at breakfast, go the whole hog when it comes to orange or yellow colors, which you can get from oranges, of course, papayas, pumpkins, sweet corn, pineapples, and lemon. Alpha- and Beta-carotene that you get from these fruits and veggies helps your body create Vitamin A, which is necessary for healthier eyes, stronger bones, and a smoother skin.

3) Green

It is no secret anymore why spinach is good for you. Packed with enough calcium for the body, the greens such as spinach, cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts (don’t wrinkle your nose!), and avocados work wonders. Chlorophyll, present in the green vegetables and fruits, is an active detoxifier while you also get magnesium, which you require to conduct close to 325 chemical activities inside your body. In fact, go for the dark green because that packs the most nutritious ‘punch.’

4) White

If you suffer from high Blood Pressure, go for an onion, or bananas, or pears, or mushrooms because the white fruits and vegetables contain allicin, a powerful antioxidant that is instrumental in bringing down your high BP as well as combating high LDL levels. These food items also stimulate the B and T cells of your body, giving your immune system a boost.

5) Purple/Blue

If you love plums, jambul, blueberries, beetroot, aubergines, or purple cabbage, then it is a wonderful thing. These fruits and veggies are high in Anthocyanins, which are good for the health of your heart. The blue fruits and vegetables also supply enough fiber to your body and provide antioxidants to combat male cancers. They are also low in calories so you don’t have to worry about getting fat.

Add colors to your plate to add health to your life and not just on Holi, you can continue to do so on every festival throughout the year. Happy Holi!
