Combine egg, sugars, and extract; beat well.
Sift together dry ingredients; gradually add to egg mixture, beating well.
Stir in shortening, oats, and nuts.
Chill dough about 1 hour.
Spread 1/4 inch thick on greased cooky sheet, leaving 1 inch space around edges of sheet.
Bake in moderate oven (350Â°) till golden brown and fiat in center, about 15 minutes.
At once cut in squares; remove from pan and cool on rack
