Ingredients
  Egg 1
  Light molasses 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
  Shortening 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs), melted
  Sifted all purpose flour 3 Cup (48 tbs)
  Sugar 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
  Baking soda 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Salt 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Cinnamon 1 Teaspoon
  Cloves 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Ginger 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Tiny multicolored candies 1 Tablespoon
  Confectionery sugar 1 Tablespoon
Directions

Beat the egg well; blend in the molasses and shortening.
Sift the flour with the sugar, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger.
Gradually add to the molasses mixture, mixing at first with a spoon, then kneading by hand until well blended.
Roll the dough into balls the size of marbles.
Roll some in the colored candies to coat completely; leave the remaining balls plain to be rolled in confectioners' sugar after baking.
Place an inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet.
Bake in a 350° oven for 10 to 12 minutes.
Remove at once from the cookie sheet.
Roll the plain cookies in confectioners' sugar while warm.
