McDonald’s ‘Washington’ Nugget Sold On EBay
Although the first American President George Washington may not have approved of it but the fact is that a McDonald’s chicken McNugget, which resembles the president in profile, was recently sold on the online auction store, eBay, for $8,100. In case you have been living on Mars for the past few weeks and are not already aware of the matter, read on to find more:-
1) George Washington McNugget
It was Rebekah Speight of Dakota City, Nebraska, who first spotted the uncanny resemblance of the nugget to the first US President. She had visited McDonald’s along with her children and purchased the chicken McNugget order. When her kids did not finish the order, she was about to toss the rest of the nuggets into the dust bin. However, just before doing so, she spotted the ‘George Washington’ nugget and realized that it resembled the profile of the founding father of the American Constitution.
2) Three Years in the Freezer
However, it was not till three years were over that Rebekah finally shared the news with the rest of the world. For three years, she kept the McNugget in the freezer, hidden away from the world but recently, she took it out and auctioned it on eBay. Describing her discovery on the website, Speight said, “Approximately 3 years ago, I treated my children to the 99 cent McNugget Tuesday and play time at our local McDonald’s. As I was cleaning up, I noticed one particular nugget and began to laugh. I picked it up for a close look, and sure enough it was in the likeness of President George Washington. I decided to take it home and show my husband this hysterical find.” She further says, “When he arrived home, I pulled it out of the freezer and he could not believe his eyes. We shared a moment of laughter as we joked about putting it on eBay. Then back in the freezer it went.”
3) Show & Tell
For three years, the McNugget became a “show and tell” story for the family and friends who came to visit Speights. Although, everyone reacted with awe and laughter on seeing this remarkable nugget, Rebekah did not think of putting it up for auction until recently. As Rebekah describes herself, “We have shared many laughs over this ‘President George Washington Chicken McNugget’ but now he has been called to a higher purpose.”
4) The Higher Purpose
Rebekah put it online for auction because she wanted to raise $15,000 so that 50 children from her local church could be sent to a summer camp in Sioux City, Iowa. The first bid for the nugget was of $100. Soon the item became a popular piece of auction on the website with 44,795 views in total. Although Rebekah is amazed at the response her nugget got on eBay, the historic piece of fried chicken had its share of problems too. Last month, the eBay took down the nugget because of the violations caused in the expired food category. However, the site put the nugget back on for auction as it was “willing to make exceptions to help Rebekah’s cause.”
While Rebekah is still to ship the nugget to the top bidder, whose identity is yet to be revealed, she says that she is surprised by the coverage that the frozen piece got in the international media. The McDonald’s chicken McNuggets were recently in news because of a British girl, Stacey, who collapsed after being on a diet of these nuggets for years on end. However, the eBay auction has definitely been an interesting news for the fast food chain, although no one is going to have a bite of it ever.
