General Problems Faced With Silicone Baking Products
Recently silicone bake wares caught my attention and I was too eager to replace my traditional bake wares with colorful, light weight and non-stick silicone baking products. However as a skeptical baker I decided to do a research on the general problems faced with silicone baking products and check the response from real users before making a buying decision. This is what I found and I would like to share my findings about the silicone baking products’ problems for everyone’s knowledge.
Non-Stick is actually sticky
Silicone baking products are marketed as totally non-stick that do not require any greasing or dusting. Many users don’t share the same opinion. The biggest of all silicone baking products’ problems is that it doesn’t release the baked food like cake and muffins perfectly. While the cake sticks, there are issues with the shape of muffins. Thus, metal pans are clear winners when consumers compare silicone wares.
Another general problem faced with silicone baking products is its order retention problem. Although manufacturers claim that silicone does not retain food odor, it is not true. Foods with a strong odor, like fish, leave the silicone bake ware smelly which is usually difficult to get rid of. On this front, silicone wares even start to smell after prolonged use. This a general problem faced with silicone baking products especially with inexpensive silicone baking products.
Impact on health
There is no evidence or research to confirm that food cooked in silicone bake ware is safe for consumption. Silicone is new and hence studies related to long term effects on health are yet to be done. Although it is non-toxic, inert and stable, the actual effects on health will be known after prolonged usage. Since plastic can be mixed easily with silicone products it is recommended that one checks the silicone percentage in a product before buying. Ideally it should be 100 % silicone.
Impact on Environment
Although silicone is eco-friendly, production of silicone is not. The process emits a lot of carbon dioxide which is hazardous for the environment. New methods of eco-friendly manufacturing are set up but it will take a while before the manufactures give up old traditional methods.
Tips for consumes
- Always buy silicone products from well known manufacturers or brands.
- Buy 100 % silicone cooking sets only.
- Follow guidelines while using, this may eliminate the problems faced with silicone.
- If you are too concerned with your health, it is better to stick to metal baking products until you find enough evidence to ensure that silicone is safe.
