New Labelling Regulations Call For Nutrition

To make consumers aware of what they are eating new labelling regulations will be formulated now. Around 40 of the most consumed poultry and meat cuts will be covered under the meat labelling.

This new nutrition labelling regulations have been made by USDA and will be effective from January 1, 2012. As per the labelling regulation, all the meet labeling will have calorie, fat and saturated fat content.

Also, the nutrition labeling will carry the lean percentage statement. This labeling regulation aims to make the consumer aware of lean protein and fat while buying.

The labelling regulations will also set up food panels which will advise the consumers regarding the nutrient content of meat and poultry in order to enable them choose the right product as per their need. In a new labeling regulation release Agriculture Department Secretary Tom Vilsack said “We need to do all we can to provide nutrition labels that will help consumers make informed choices.”

The consumers will be surprised when they will start monitoring the labels closely. The amount of fat and calorie intake will be easily monitored through these nutrition labeling.

Besides, the USDA will also provide the dietary plans to the consumers for every five years.

The labelling regulation has listed own the meat cuts and poultry that will have nutrition labeling.

These meat labelling will be done on whole or boneless chicken breasts, beef whole cuts which include tenderloin steak or brisket and ground turkey and hamburger in chopped meat and poultry products.

Some of the raw meat cuts to have nutrition labelling under labelling regulation are beef chuck blade roast, beef loin top loin steak, beef rib roast large end, pork loin chop, pork loin country style ribs, pork loin top loin chop boneless.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest has taken a stand against the labelling regulations. As per CSPI, the nutrition labelling will for a for ounce portion even if it is sold in single serving pack; this might confuse and misled the consumers about the calories and fats contained in it.
