  2. Read this post.

Now, Silver Spoons: 25 Years of Chefs and Celebrations, was the silver anniversary of Citymeals-on-Wheels' Annual Chef's Tribute to the memory of James Beard and for the benefit of Citymeals-on-Wheels. It is one of the biggest and chic Tasting events in New York to be hosted at the Rockefeller Center. Over the years, this event has helped raise 15 million dollars to benefit the hungry in New York.

So how did it all start? Well, back in 1981, the all American Chef James Beard and the food critic and novelist Gael Greene read a newspaper article on how many homebound elderly folks in New York had to go without food on weekends because the government funded meal programs served food only from Monday through Friday. Being food lovers themselves and good people in general, they couldn't stand to see people going hungry. They had to do something about, so they founded the Citymeals-on-Wheels, a non profit organization with the help of family and friends. Today, this organization provides 3 million meals annually to the hungry, homebound senior citizens.

On June 14, 2010, this gala event saw close to 1000 guests and 39 master chefs from USA and around the world. This tasting event's grand host was Nick Valenti of the Patina Restaurant Group. Each chef had made his or her favorite signature dish. Some highlights of this tasting event were Chef Wolfgang Puck's Roasted Duck Bao Buns, Sweet & Sour Cherries, Hiramasa Sashimi and Crispy Rice and Chef Nobu Matsuhisa's Assortment of Hand Rolls. Incidentally, Chef Wolfgang Puck was one of chefs who trained under the great James Beard himself. All the proceeds of this event will go towards the feeding the hungry, homebound elderly.

The world could do with more good Samaritans like them, especially if they can cook and serve an awesome meal. And if you would like to donate and help them, please log on to citymeals.org.
