What Preservatives Are Used In McDonalds Food

A number of preservatives used at McDonald is the secret of its fresh burgers and chicken nuggets. These preservatives can preserve food for months without rotting, which is not a heartening result because all healthy food rot within a day or two. So what is that preserves the food, know the preservatives used at McDonald before you take your next big bite.


TBHQ - Tertiary Butylhydroquinone

TBHQ is used to preserve unsaturated oils used for frying McDonald’s foods. This preservative prevents food from spoiling or getting rancid. A derivative of petroleum, consumption of 1 gm TBHQ can cause ringing ears, suffocation, nausea and vomiting. Consumption of about 5 grams of TBHQ is sufficient to kill a human being. Though they are used in very small quantities, it can still be unsafe. Studies suggest, TBHQ aggravates anxiety and causes restlessness.


BHA - Butylated hydroxyanisole and BHT - Butylated hydroxytoluene

Above preservatives are carcinogenic in nature and they aided growth of cancer cells when trialed on animals. Many researchers believe that, these preservatives are responsible for high cases of asthma and child allergies.


Calcium Propionate and Sodium Propionate

McDonald’s food is high in sodium, beyond an acceptable limit that can cause serious problems for patients with high blood pressure. Salt sensitive people should also keep away form high sodium food as its can worsen allergies. These preservatives are used in breads and buns of McDonald foods.


Preservatives for fries
While the main preservative is natural salt, the names of preservatives used for maintaining the color and reducing foam while frying is unknown.  


Sodium acid pyrophosphate, monosodium phosphate and citric acid

Above preservatives are used in McDonald’s scrambled eggs to preserve the color. Other preservatives include potassium sorbate and artificial colors include palmitate and beta carotene.


If you think grabbing a coffee would be safer, think again because McDonald's coffee contains the following preservatives and chemicals, sodium phosphate, , Di-Acetyl Tartrate Ester of Monoglyceride, tetra sodium pyrophosphate, sodium polyphosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, carrageenan, sodium stearoyl lactylate and sodium citrate. These preservatives used at McDonald's coffee are equally harmful. 


Salads are good for health. McDonald’s salad contains propylene glycol alginate in its salads and sauces indirectly through use of glazes. Though FDA, Food and Drug Administration of America has recognized propylene glycol alginate as GRAS or generally recognized as safe, this preservative is commonly used for preserving food in pitfall traps.


Preservatives used in McDonald’s crispy chicken breast fillets is dimethylpolysiloxane and sodium phosphates. These chemicals are ingredients of detergent used in dishwasher.


Countless preservatives used in McDonald’s food is extremely unhealthy and harmful. Though they are used in very minimum quantities, all preservatives put together can play havoc to your health.
