Ingredients
Firmly packed brown sugar 2 Cup (32 tbs)
  Water 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
  Cream of tartar 1⁄8 Teaspoon
  Molasses 1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs)
  Butter 2 Tablespoon
  Vinegar 1 Teaspoon
  Vanilla 1 Teaspoon
Directions

Combine the sugar, water, and cream of tartar in a heavy-bottomed saucepan.
Stir together over low heat until the sugar dissolves.
Cover, boil 3 minutes, uncover.
Boil slowly 9 minutes without stirring.
Add the molasses, butter, and vinegar.
Boil over medium heat to the hard-crack stage, 300 degrees.
Add the vanilla.
Pour immediately onto a large, well-greased tray or marble slab.
As the edge of the candy firms and cools, turn it into the centre with a spatula.
When cool enough to handle, butter your hands, roll the candy into a ball, and pull the taffy until it is beautifully straw-coloured.
Pull and twist into ropes 3/4" in diameter.
Cut into 1/2" pieces with greased kitchen shears.
Cool and wrap pieces individually in waxed paper.
