Bhang-Marijuana Milk

vikas.kumar's picture
A very popular 'Holi' drink. More like a milk shake infused with marijuana extract.
Ingredients
  Water 2 Cup (32 tbs)
Marijuana 1 Ounce (Fresh Leaves And Flowers Of A Female Plant Preferred)
Warm milk 4 Cup (64 tbs)
Blanched and chopped almonds 2 Tablespoon
  Chopped blanched almonds 2 Tablespoon
Garam masala 1⁄8 Teaspoon (A Mixture Of Cloves, Cinnamon, Cardamom And Other Spices)
  Powdered ginger 1⁄4 Teaspoon
  Rose water 1 Teaspoon
  Sugar 3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)
Directions

1. Remove all seeds and twigs from the marijuana.
2. Boil water and pour into a clean teapot.
3. Add the marijuana to the teapot and cover. Let it brew for about 7 minutes.
4. Strain the water & marijuana through a piece of muslin cloth, collect the water & save.
5. Take the leaves and flowers and squeeze between your hands to extract any liquid that remains. Add this to the water.
6. Place the leaves and flowers in a mortar and add 2 teaspoons warm milk. Slowly but firmly grind the milk and leaves together. Gather up the marijuana and squeeze out as much milk as you can. Repeat this process until you have used about 1/2 cup of milk (about 4 to 5 times). Collect all the milk that has been extracted and place in a bowl. By this time the marijuana will have turned into a pulpy mass.
7. Add the chopped almonds and add some more warm milk. Grind this in the mortar until a fine paste is formed. Squeeze this paste and collect the extract as before. Repeat a few more times until all that is left are some fibres and nut meal. Discard the residue.
8. Combine all the liquids that have been collected, including the water the marijuana was brewed in.
9. Add to this the garam masala, dried ginger and rosewater. Add the sugar and remaining milk and mix well.

Chill and serve.

Story
A Very Happy Holi to everyone. Like all festivals, Holi too has a few dishes that are unique. Among the drinks, there is 'thandai' and 'bhang'. Technically, 'bhang' is a general term for the extract from the plant (especially female). It is consumed in various forms - the leaves that people smoke, the 'bhang ki goli' that one could either swallow directly or along with 'paan'/betel. The extract is added to food to make 'bhang burfies', hash brownies and a whole lot of other concoctions. The most popular derivative is this 'mixed into milk' form and hence when we talk of 'bhang' its usually of this 'marijuana milk'. I came up with this name while posting the recipe...you could get more inventive and call it a whole lot of other names...'Hash Shake' for one! This recipe is not mine. Its compiled from a few 'Holi' sites and an article from The Times of India. I had full plans of trying it out today but couldn't manage fresh leaves. Had a 'Bhang Paan' instead. It took time to 'come into its own'...and then the effect lasted around 3 hrs!

Hello Vikas, Please post videos of dhaba style punjabi gravies...exactly how they make it at dhabas...if you possibly could...i would really appreciate your effort! Since i don't live in india anymore, its hard to get the authentic taste to make me nostalgic of all that yummy indian food i had when i was there:(...anyways, thanks in advance!!!!:)

Bhang and Thandai are undoubtedly the most popular beverages for Holi. This is the first time am coming across a "Bhang" recipe ;) Also I believe its popular owing to its characteristics of influencing the mind. I believe people who drink a couple of glasses of bhang tend to get extremely emotional/uncontrolled laughing/talking to much/repeatedly doing the sames chores!!! :)

Its popular for obvious reasons...I've seen people do all these things you've mentioned. There is this one friend of mine (a good mimic) who kept repeating a dialogue from some odd film. He kept saying "paanch sau ka...paanch sau ka...something" and this went on for a good 2-3 hours!

Nice recipe. But where can I get bhang ingredients here in Mumbai? Thanks in advance.

well...i don't think it's legal...or atleast it's not sold in the open. getting leaves (not dried ones) is even more difficult but you could try the paanwalas. if you go to 10 shops, atleast one may have a 'bhang ki goli'. ofcourse, bhang is more readily available around holi.

Hi, Can you point me to some of the holi sites where you got the recipes from? I am really interested in making bhang. Is it possible to make it from hash? (I don't have weed handy). This is really an awesome drink. I had the privilege of having it some 15 years ago.

Marijuana is the number one cash $$$$ crop in California. They are talking of legalizing it to allow taxes on it. California would collect $2 billion a year in taxes if it becomes legal. Issue is feds say no, so prez would have to allow state law to prevail. Shanti/Mary-Anne

How much do you recommend for a serving size? I have taken this before and was served in a shot glass - but do not know what the ratio was used. Would a shot glass suffice for this recipe per person?

What is the preferred serving size per person?

Very interesting recipe Vikas!I just finished a grand meal of quinoa with fresh carrots and green tomatoes from the backyard garden--topped it off with a little Braggs liquid aminos, some fresh flax seed oil,and a nice chunk of bhang butter.I'll try out your recipe in the coming weeks;I bet it would be great warmed up on one of these chilly autumn nights! Also, keep in mind folks that when you're putting a full ounce of "your preferred herbal blend" into only 6 cups worth of liquid(maybe less when you account for evaporation,etc.),well...the stuff's going to be POTENT.Normally for green recipes you would only use 1/8-1/4oz and that would be potent enough for four people to split evenly and have a comfortable time.Someone above mentioned they had had it in a shot glass before--I'd go that route and wait a good hour, then see how you feel and experiment from there. What you(probably)don't want is to all-of-a-sudden find yourself in an uncomfortable situation because you were not patient enough and guzzled it all.Hope that helps!

Yea, I made the mistake of taking an entire glass full off a street vendor in Jaipur. I remember sitting on the roof top of the hotel, trying to stay sitting up straight. It was thrilling but kind of awful at the same time due to the fact that I hate to stay awake to catch a 10:00pm train. I barely made it to the train, ad I seaborne Bhang at 4:00pm. The most intense mj experience of my life and I have them regularly. I don't know how much was in it, but I had the straight "pulp" and it was about half the size of a hockey puck.

Oh how I miss drinking bhang sitting on the mango trees while drinking lassii and staring at zebras in the safari in mumbai whilst the tigers would jump up and the monsoon would drench the bhang.

Why didn't they use use ghee as the solvent for the cannibinoids instead of milk? How can you be sure you be sure you're not leaving a bunch of lipid-soluble canninoids in the buds?

While travelling, have ganja without the seeds and twigs with honey, chewed in the mouth till the whole ganja gets pasty and then swallowed with a little water, the bliss-effects can be seen within fifteen to twenty minutes, Avoid spicy foods and alcohol, drink lots of cool water to avoid dehydrating feel in the throat, as most would experience dryness of mouth, pinkish-white of the eyes, apply hair oil on the scalp, have lots of almonds and apricots and enjoy the bliss of understanding the universe around you in a new perspective. God bless you all for understanding ganja and bhang.
